Air Travel
Back to Transportation Home
Currently, the airline industry is responsible for less than 10% of carbon emissions in the world. That being said, every flight that you take will have a huge impact on your carbon footprint. The airline industry is growing at an astounding pace, with more and more inexpensive short haul flights. Many of these short haul flights are replacing people using cars, busses, or trains for these trips resulting in more carbon emissions since planes emit more carbon per passenger mile.
At the moment, there are not many promising technologies to reduce the carbon emissions from air travel. That means that to fight global warming we need to fly less. Where possible, take vacations closer to home and drive there or take a train or bus. If you are asked to fly somewhere for your work, ask if it is possible to have a video teleconference instead. This saves the hassles of a short trip and will reduce your carbon footprint.
If you do have to fly, keep the following in mind to make your carbon footprint as small as possible:
- Try to go during the daytime. Studies have shown that daytime flights produce fewer carbon emissions, which means a smaller carbon footprint for you.
- Always fly in economy class. More people in the same plane means fewer planes in the sky releasing carbon emissions.
- Pack as light as you can. The heavier the plane the more fuel it will use.
- Offset the emissions created from your flight. Click here for more information on Carbon Offsets.
