Audi Throws its Hat into the Electric Car Market Ring

Chairman of German carmaker, Audi, has announced that the company plans to release an all electric model in the next 5 to 10 years that does not have any emissions. In the interview with a German magazine, Rupert Stadler, the chairman, said the company is putting a lot of resources behind the new project, which they see as a great opportunity. “Our research capacity within the group is larger than many competitors,” he said.

Until now, Audi has pushed clean diesel as their option of choice for more efficient cars, but they now expect electric vehicles to dominate the auto industry within the next decade.

The company gave little indication about the look and style of the proposed electric cars, presumably because they are still very early in the development process. But Audi has traditionally released very elegant and sporty cars, and Wolgang Egger, head of design at Audi, has said any future design will reflect the existing brand.

For North American drivers that love the look and feel of an Audi but want to cut their carbon footprint, their hybrid models are expected to be available in the US in the “foreseeable future”, said Willibert Schleuter, the head of their electronics department.
