June 20, 2008

Earlier this week, scooter company Vespa Canada, launched the first ever carbon neutral motor vehicle, helping drivers cut their carbon footprint. Vespa Canada has pledged to offset the estimated carbon emissions of each unit they sell in 2008.

The full press release is available here, or see the Vespa website for more info.

They are also adding some ‘green-themed’ vehicles to their fleet, called the EnviroVespas, which come in eco-themed colours – yellow for the sun, blue for water, and green for grass.

At the announcement press conference, Morey Chaplick of Vespa Canada said, “Vespa Canada has just taken a quantum leap in making transportation fun, affordable, and most importantly, environmentally responsible.”

The new program is launched in partnership with the Environmental Defense Fund and the Carbon Reduction Fund, from whom they will be purchasing all the required carbon offsets.

Vespa, which comes from the Italian word for ‘wasps’, is also supporting the defense of the habitats of bees and wasps. The Executive Director of the Environmental Defense Fund said, “By helping to tackle climate change and protect the bees, wasps, and other pollinators need to survive, Vespa is setting a tremendous example for other Canadian companies to follow.”

The announcement from Vespa comes at a time when the major auto manufacturers are desperately trying to improve their ‘green image’ by ditching the gas guzzling SUVs in favor of hybrids and fuel efficient vehicles. Seems like they should have talked to Vespa for some creative ideas on going green a long time ago.
