Coke bottleCoca Cola is planning to increase their recycling efforts of plastic bottles in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint and fight global warming. The company also wants to reduce the amount of material used per bottle so that the recycled plastic goes even further.

Coke cans already contain about 50% recycle material, and their glass bottles use about 45% recycled glass. However, they have not has nearly as much success with plastic bottles, which currently only use 3.6% recycled materials.

Coke is hoping to grow that to 10% by 2010, a significant increase and a big step toward reducing their carbon footprint.

To help reach this goal, Coke will be building a bottle recycling plant in North Carolina.

Last year, Coke introduced a glass bottle in the UK that uses less material, and is hoping to increase the proportion of bottles that use the new design which has a smaller carbon footprint.

Earlier this year Coke's main rival, Pepsi, announced a new bottle that uses less material.
