Good News from Nissan on Electric Cars

Nissan is staying adamant that they are on track to release a mass market electric car by 2010 in the US to help consumers cut their carbon footprint, and intend to make a handsome profit doing so.
While many companies are trying to bring out green products to improve their image, Nissan maintains that the introduction of their electric cars is done purely for profit. Although this doesn’t sound great to an environmentalist, profitability is crucial in the electric car market if it is to be developed into a worldwide industry. Without the profit motivation electric cars would never reach the masses.
After reaching the US market in 2010, Nissan plans to take their electric cars global by 2012. However, different parts of the world will have different expectations. The company says that an electric car in the US will need to have a range of at least 100 miles to be practical, while in Europe that could be much lower.
Even with the extra development costs, Nissan intends for their electric cars to be priced competitively. And under no circumstances will any of their electric cars have a range extensive gas-powered engine.
Carlos Ghosn, head of Nissan-Renault, said “I want a pure electric car. I don’t want a range extender. I don’t want another hybrid.”
Earlier this week, Nissan announced that they will be working with the state of Tennessee and its largest utility company to study and perhaps even install the charging infrastructure required for electric cars. Once the infrastructure is available, the adoption of electric cars by the general public who are looking to cut their carbon footprint will be much speedier.
