Pepsi Designs Bottle for Less Waste
Beverage giant Pepsi Co has announced that they will be releasing a new plastic bottle design in the next month that reduces the amount of plastic by 20%. The 12-packs and 24-packs of these bottles will also require 5% less shrink-wrap.
In an ongoing effort to be seen as a green company that is reducing their carbon footprint, changes to the packaging of their products is crucial to Pepsi’s reputation. Some cities, such as San Francisco, have gone as far as banning the purchase of plastic bottles with municipal funds in an effort to reduce waste.
The new bottles will initially only be rolled out on non-carbonated drinks, including their various bottles juices and water. Robert Lewis, a VP at Pepsi was quoted as saying “The challenge was to deliver significantly lighter packaging that would provide the same shelf life as the heavier bottle, withstand the manufacturing and distribution process yet not compromise aesthetics.”
Pepsi has already taken steps to improve their green image, including buying almost all of their energy from renewable sources, and their ‘Performance with Purpose’ mission designed to fuel sustainable growth. Nonetheless, due to the nature of their industry, Pepsi is still responsible for a vast amount of waste coming from their bottles, and a high level of energy use required by all the coolers and vending machines used to keep their drinks ice cold.
