Tesla Opens Their First Dealership
Tesla Motors, make of the electric Tesla Roadster, has opened their first official car dealership in Santa Monica, California this past Friday.
The location is in the heart of a swanky shopping district, a good fit for the $109,000 cars. Their next store is expected to open in a few months in San Carlos, and will cater to the wealthy, Silicon Valley millionaires wanting to cut their carbon footprint.
Demand for the Roadster has been strong so far with over 600 orders, and another 400 people on their waiting list.
Despite its electric engine, the Roadster still gets 220 miles per charge with a mileage equivalent of 135 mpg. Add to that enough torque to go from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds and this car can match the appeal of any sports car on the road.
Tesla is planning to release a luxury sedan sometime in 2009 that will come in two models: an all electric model and a range extended version that will also use liquid fuel to extend its range.
Tesla is currently enjoying the role of market leader for electric cars, though this won’t last forever as General Motors is launching the Chevrolet Volt in 2010, and Canadian auto parts maker, Magna International, recently announced their intention to produce an electric car by 2010 as well.
