Toyota will Build Prius in America

In an effort to adjust to changes in the American auto market, Toyota will begin producing their Prius hybrid in America. As more customers try to cut their carbon footprint and reduce their gas bills, the demand of gas guzzling SUVs is plummeting while drivers try to get their hands on an efficient hybrid like the Prius.

The production of the Prius will take place at their planned Mississippi factory. This factory was originally designed to build their Highlander SUV, but sales for this vehicle have dropped significantly. Toyota will now redesign the plant to accommodate production of the Prius and expects it to be up and running by 2011, more than a year later than originally expected.

Company sources have also said that production at their Indiana plant will be cut due to lagging demand. A spokesman from Toyota, however, would not comment on the story.

Toyota’s overall sales have fallen lately, along with most major auto manufacturers, as drivers feel the pain each time they fill up their car with gas. While the change in consumer behavior is mostly driven by economic forces, it is sure to have a positive impact on global warming as drivers reduce their carbon footprint.

Toyota was widely expected to surpass GM in terms of sales in the US this year as GM has suffered with the changes in the market. However, the demand for most of Toyota’s models has dropped as well, keeping them in the number two position for a while longer. If Toyota is able to increase the production of their fuel efficient vehicles fast enough, they will surely take the top spot as customers seek to cut their carbon footprint.
