UK Food Companies Promise to Cut Mileage

A group of 40 food and drink companies in the UK have committed themselves to reducing their mileage in an effort to cut their carbon footprint.

The companies have all signed up to the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) Environmental Checklist and Clause for Greener Food Transport. Some of the big names that have signed up already include Cadbury Schweppes and Weetabix Ltd.

Each company has committed to using a 10 point checklist for reducing mileage when shipping their products around the country, one of the largest sources of their carbon emissions. Some of the measures on the checklist include using only full truck loads, not sending empty trucks, and using trains instead of trucks where possible.

The FDF says that implementing these measures will help the industry meet its target of cutting carbon emissions 20% by 2012 from their 2002 levels.

Ian Ferguson, the President of the FDF, said “The companies that have signed up to the Checklist and Clause are the first of what we hope will be many more signatories to this commitment to achieving fewer and friendlier transport miles.”

United Biscuits, one of the signatories, has already reduced their mileage by almost 3 million miles a year since 2005 by implementing similar measures. This is expected to have reduced their carbon emissions by 4,700 tons by the end of this year.

Once these same steps are taken by these 40 companies, and hopefully more in the future, it will sure have a wide impact on the carbon footprint of the industry and be a significant step toward fighting global warming.

The UK is a global leader in fighting global warming and this step by food companies is just the latest example of the determination of UK companies and citizens to cut their carbon footprint.
