US Doing the Least to Fight Global Warming

July 3, 2008

A week before the G8 summit in Japan, a report called the G8 Climate Scorecards 2008 was released saying that the US has done the least to cut their carbon footprint and fight global warming. The report also said that the group as a whole is not doing nearly enough to slow the rate of climate change.

Britain came top in the rankings, and were followed closely by France and Germany. Britain has recently announced a big push into offshore wind energy to help them meet their renewable energy targets by 2020. Germany also received praise in cutting their carbon footprint by using a lot of renewable energy.

“But all three countries are at best half as far along the road as they should be”, said a statement announcing the report results

The report was commissioned by the World Wildlife Fund and was completed by Ecofys, a Dutch consulting company.

In addition to looking at the G8 countries, it also examined major emerging economies, including China, India, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa. These countries did not receive an overall ranking for their efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and fight global warming.
