Construction to Begin at Offshore Wind Farm near Germany

Construction at a wind farm planned offshore from Northern Germany is expected to start within a week, and once completed to will help the nation cut its carbon footprint.
The wind farm, called Alpha Ventus, is located in the North Sea and is often called West Borkum as it is close to the island of Borkum. The total cost of the project is roughly $300 million.
“Having received the go-ahead, we will start with building work out at sea by the end of next week,” a company spokesman said.
Alpha Ventus plans to have 12 turbines at the site generating 5 megawatts of power each once they are completed. The whole site will help the country cut its carbon footprint by providing enough energy for 50,000 homes.
Once the project is completed, the turbines will be connected to the energy grid by a 70 km underwater cable.
Alpha Ventus is the first of 30 similar farms that are planned in the North Sea near Germany. All of them are sponsored by the government in an effort to cut their carbon footprint and reach their goal of doubling the renewable energy used in the country by 2020.
Other countries, such as Britain and Denmark, have more advanced offshore wind farms, but the German ones are unique because they are further out at sea and are hoping to take advantage of the stronger wind that far from land.
