Double the Mileage on Your Car
June 6, 2008
Artemis, a company based in Scotland, has developed new engine technology that has double the mileage of cars used in testing allowing you to drastically reduce your carbon footprint. The new engine system is based on a hydraulic hybrid transmission.
The project, over a decade old now, began with the goal of reducing carbon emissions by 30% on the highway. Needless to say, the company has exceeded this goal by a considerable margin.
The new system uses what the company calls Digital Displacement (DD) to help reduce your carbon footprint.
The Energy Trust, a third party organization in the UK, has performed independent tests on the new technology and have confirmed the benefits initially stated by the company in terms of reductions in carbon emissions and improved mileage.
The DD system excels most markedly in start and stop traffic, most commonly in cities. In these situations, it is able to harness power from braking much more efficiently than regular electric hybrids, leading to the improved mileage and a smaller carbon footprint. More specifically, electric hybrids are not great at capturing energy from ‘hard’ driving, an area where the DD excels, making the technology ideal for large vehicles like trucks, buses, and heavy machinery.
But don’t expect to get DD technology in your next car. As of yet, there are no concrete plans for bringing this to the mass market, which could take upwards of ten years.
