Iberdola Renewables, a Spanish electrical giant, has announced a new deal with Gamesa, a turbine manufacturer based in Madrid, that will see them install 4500 MW of wind power. This will drastically help their customers cut their carbon footprint.
The deal, valued at €6.3 billion, will cover the project from start to finish, including the turbines themselves, installation, transportation, and maintenance. The 4500 MW of turbines will be installed in Europe, the US, and Mexico, and represent an increase to their already substantial wind power generation capabilities of over 42,000 MW.
Iberdola has been involved in other recent deals with turbine suppliers, getting 300 MW from each of GE and Mitsubishi.
Wind power has been getting a lot of attention lately due to governments relying on the energy form to help them cut their carbon footprint and meet international requirements. The extra support is providing much needed investment dollars to the technology, hopefully improving its efficiency while reducing its cost. The Department of Energy in the US has said they expect a large portion of the energy to come from wind in the next few decades. In the UK, the government is starting a big push into offshore wind farms around the country to help reduce their carbon footprint and meet their greenhouse gas emissions reductions targets.
