Make Your Own Ethanol

Have you ever had to leave home just to fill up your car with gas? Have you ever wanted to use ethanol in your car but was unable to find a filling station within 100 miles? Your problems may now be solved, in the form of the new EFuel 100 MicroFueler. The new machine is produced by a start-up called E-Fuel.

The announcement of the new product came last week, by company founder and CEO, Thomas Quinn. So what exactly is the EFuel 100 MicroFueler?

The MicroFueler is essentially a make-your-own ethanol tool designed for home use. Simply connect the machine to a power a water source, and then add sugar and yeast or discarded alcohol. Within a week the MicroFueler will have produced 35 gallons of ethanol that can be used in a car that takes regular gas.

The machine, which will cost just under $10,000, is expected to be available in the fourth quarter of this year.

While there have been many critics of biofuels, including Cut Your Footprint, the MicroFueler seems to pass the test of helping to reduce your carbon footprint. Most ethanol in the US is made from corn, which is far less efficient as a fuel than sugar. As well, since sugar is currently a surplus crop, an increase in use is not expected to have much of an impact on food prices.

Many people around the world are looking to biofuels and ethanol as a solution to the carbon emissions created from burning gas in transportation, but is has yet to gain widespread use across the US. This is largely due to practical reasons. As there are only 1200 ethanol stations in the country, the technology has yet to reach a critical mass that would make it useable for most. The new MicroFueler could help to solve this as you can always fill up your car from home, but still use regular gasoline when the need arises.
