An agreement has been struck between the Nissan - Renault Alliance and the government of Portugal to bring electric cars and the charging infrastructure to the small European country. When this is up and running it will provide drivers with a viable alternative to gas powered cars and let them cut their carbon footprint.
Nissan and Renault will be doing a study with the government to see what is needed to make electric cars attractive to consumers in the industry. The government will study the infrastructure needs and look into what is required to make electric cars an attractive alternative to consumers in the country. In return, the Alliance will roll out the electric cars by 2011.
Earlier this year, the Alliance announced a similar partnership with Project Better Place to bring electric cars and infrastructure to Denmark and Israel. There have also been rumours of a similar deal with the city of San Francisco.
Project Better Place is committed to bringing electric cars to the masses around the world in an effort to fight global warming. Their plans involve created the required infrastructure then offering customers a subsidy (often with government help) to buy electric cars. The drivers then sign up to a subscription to use the charging network.
All of these projects, however, are taking place in relatively small countries. Such an arrangement would be far harder to implement in a country like the US where the number of charging stations required would be far greater. However, as the range of electric cars improve, this will become a more viable venture in bigger countries that want to help drivers cut their carbon footprint.
