A year ago, the city of Paris launched a bike sharing program to help cut their carbon footprint. The program has been a huge success with thousands of people renting bikes for a few hours at a time. Paris now wants to copy that success, but with electric cars this time, helping citizens and tourists reduce their carbon footprint and fight global warming.
Someone renting an electric car would be able to pick it up or drop it off at any of the 700 planned lots around the city. The driver would then only pay for the limited time that they used the car. This could help thousands of people who occasionally need a car for certain errands, but can generally due without owning one themselves.
The city expects that the electric car sharing program would reduce the total number of cars on the road and many people could simply rent one for a few hours when needed instead of buying or leasing a car of their own. As well, the use of electric cars will have obvious benefits for fighting global warming, and will be easy to charge at any of the lots around the city.
There are still many details that need to be worked out, such as how the lots will be monitored and if international licenses will be accepted, but the program has thus far received good reviews for Parisians.
