The state of Texas has approved the biggest wind power project in the country, which will be a big step toward reducing their carbon footprint and being a leader in the fight against global warming. Already the biggest producer of wind power in the country, this latest project will position at the forefront of the wind industry.
The project will not be building any new wind turbines, but rather will construct the transmission lines required to bring the electricity from the state’s existing turbines in the west to the urban areas of the state. The lines will be able to bring enough power to provide electricity for more than 4 million homes in the state.
However, this large a project does not come cheap. The budget is roughly $5 billion, with the exact figure yet to be agreed upon. The cost will be passed directly to the customers in Texas who can expect their electric bills to increase by about $4 a month. Construction of the lines are expected to be completed within four to five years.
Paul Hudson, Commissioner of the Public Utility Commission, hailed the project saying “We will add more wind than the 14 states following Texas combined.”
Some environmentalists have protested the expanded use of wind power in Texas and other parts other parts of the country saying it that is ruins the views and causes harm to migrating birds, though surely these are small prices to pay in comparison to the dangers of global warming and the need for people to reduce their carbon footprint.
The state is hoping that the construction of these lines will spur more investment into wind turbines in the state that will further cut their carbon footprint.
