Renewable Energy Certificates
Back to Carbon Offsets
While not the same as carbon offsets, buying Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), aso known as ‘Green Tags’ is another effective way of reducing your carbon footprint and fighting global warming. RECs provide an alternative to buying green energy when it is not available in your area.
Since all electricity gets mixed together on the grid, we are unable to choose which bits of energy are actually used in our homes. But we can choose where our money goes! Buying RECs is a great way to support renewable energy projects in your area. However, since the electricity generate from REC providers is already made, it does not meet the additionality requirement of becoming a true carbon offset.
Prices range from $5-$90 per megawatt hour, with a median price of about $20.
